listenupnorth.com was set up by Rachel as a platform for her own and other writers’ work in the form of drama, poetry, short stories, book extracts, interviews & oral history all recorded in audio & made available online for a potentially global audience. It was developed after Rachel had been part of a creative entrepreneur course at Durham University & had been awarded a place on the Digital City Fellow scheme at the Institute of Digital Innovation at Teesside University.

During its four year lifespan, listenupnorth.com recorded over 200 podcasts from almost 70 writers and ran 3 writing competitions.  Rachel was also the proud recipient of The Joseph Skipsey Award 2013 presented by Northern Voices Community Projects at an event held to commemorate 151 years since the Hartley Pit Disaster near Whitley Bay. Tyneside poet Dr Keith Armstrong presented Rachel with the award, commending not only her inspiring writing, but also the help she had given to the region’s writers through listenupnorth.com describing her contribution as “Phenomenal. This award is well earned and overdue”.

Many of the audio recordings that now feature in our Audio Library were originally created for listenupnorth.com.
