Fish Quay Tales from Old Low Light

Old Low Light, North Shields Fish Quay

Old Low Light, North Shields’ Fish Quay

Developing and running the Culture Bites @North Tyneside Podcast Project has been hard but very rewarding.  One of the great joys has been the variety of podcasts produced.  Wonderful creative work in the form of radio plays, short stories and poetry inspired by iconic locations across North Tyneside.  For this latest podcast we bring you real stories from real voices.

I have been very privileged to record The Lighthouse Ladies group who meet at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre and capture their stories and family connections to the historic Fish Quay.

Dorothy, May, Margaret and Susan recount their fascinating memories of school trips to the Fish Quay, fathers running away to sea, pulling grandfather’s boots off when he returned home after a day on the sea.

Interviewing Lighthouse LadiesAll these captivating tales were recorded round the table of the Old Low Light gallery, whilst the Lighthouse Ladies worked away on their various handicraftsOriginally used a marker tower to guide ships safely into The Tyne, the building also houses a fascinating collection of artefacts relating to the local maritime history and is manned by volunteers with a wealth of local knowledge.  Well worth a visit.

Thanks to Rachel Clarke Newcastle University and Pearl Saddington, Manager, for their support.
